1997년 업타운으로 데뷔 후 타샤니를 거쳐 마침내 솔로 앨범을 내기까지 4년이 걸렸다. 본래 타고난 재능에 그 동안 갈고 닦은 내공을 더한 [As Time Goes By]는 알앤비, 힙합, 발라드 중 어느 하나 흐트러짐 없이 소화해낸 아티스트 윤미래의 디스코그래피를 대표하는 수작이다. 섬세해진 표현과 전보다 안정적인 가창력이 눈에 띄는 발라드 "바보", 프로듀서 박근태 특유의 고급스러움이 묻어난 타이틀곡 "시간이 흐른 뒤 (As Time Goes By)"는 뒤에 등장하는 영어 버젼과 비교해서 들으면 또 다른 매력을 느낄 수 있다. "La Musique", "삶의 향기 (Soul Flower)" 등 랩 파트가 메인이 되는 트랙에선 특유의 파워 넘치는 래핑을 보여주는 한편 보컬 부분에서는 힘을 빼는 노련함을 보이며 완급을 조절했다.
독창적인 음악성을 담아낸 전체 속에서 "행복한 나를", "하루하루"가 커버된 것은 아쉽다. 이 두 곡은 단지 리메이크곡으로 청자에게 익숙한 향취를 풍길 뿐, 작품의 전체 분위기 상 정체성이 이질적인 곡이기 때문이다. 그러나 새로운 시작점에서 일종의 보험같은 장치로서 두 노래를 위치시킨 것이라면, 그 의도 역시 납득이 된다. 다소 덜 한 것이 있어야 뛰어난 것이 더 부각되는 법이니까. 본 작은 랩과 보컬 두 가지 면에서 확연하게 드러난 윤미래의 성장을 보여주기에 충분하며, 그 결과 제5회 한국대중음악상의 '최우수 알앤비&소울 (노래부문)'을 수상했다.
보컬리스트 윤미래의 진짜 가치는 Best가 아니라 Only에 있다. 감정 과잉에 빠지지 않고 담담하게 내뱉지만, 그 안에 마음을 울리는 기질은 독보적이다. 설명할 수도 배울 수도 없는 타고난 재능이 그녀를 대체 불가능한 보컬리스트로 만드는 것이다. 물론 앞으로도 자기만의 개성을 가진 가수는 계속해서 등장할 테지만, 윤미래를 대신할 수는 없을 것이다. 최근 몇 년간 OST 참여를 주로 했던 그녀이기에, 딱 그 정도의 가수인걸로 알고 있는 이도 분명 있을 터. 본 작은 그런 그들이 꼭 들어야 할 필청 음반이다.
